Car window dots - Frits Revealed

Are you a vehicle owner who spends a lot of time on the road?  If so, you’ve probably noticed a rather interesting pattern along the edge of your driver’s windshield.  If you looked closely enough, you probably noticed what appeared to be a line of black dots.  Ever wondered what these black dots really are and what purpose they serve?  If so, then you’re like hundreds of other car owners who asked their mechanics at one service check or another.  Believe it or not, these little dots are called frit, and they aren’t too mysterious after you understand the purpose they serve.

Modern vehicles have a host of interesting and complex components.  To the untrained eye, some of these vehicle components are perplexing, but with a little knowledge and understanding, you’ll come to find that each piece serves a unique purpose.  At Car Pretty, we can help you demystify some of the lesser known aspect of car components.  The windshield, as it were, is one of the most underrated parts of your vehicle’s makeup.  Yet this massive hunk of glass is paramount to the car’s overall functioning, and is actually a wonder of modern engineering.

The way that a windshield is bonded to the frame is crucial to how it performs.  A car owner might not realize this just by looking at a windshield, but it’s interesting to note that it does, in fact, play a major role in your vehicle’s performance.  The little black dots mentioned earlier, known as frit, run along the windshield’s periphery and look essentially like black enamel that has been fused right into the glass.
Frit serves a unique purpose, and the next time you look at your windshield you can pay closer attention to see what it does.  Frit basically provides an etched background surface so that the adhesive in the windshield can bond effectively to the glass.  When a car installation technician installs a windshield, the glass bonds to the car as a meeting point within the frame and the glass.  Not only that, the outside section of the frit works as a barrier against UV radiation.  This basically protects the bond from any kind of sun damage.

At Car Pretty of Philadelphia, we can help explain many unique aspects of car components.  We serve the Philadelphia and surrounding area and are always ready to assist with your car questions, even if they’re as complicated as those related to frit.  For aesthetic purposes, the frit conceals adhesive on the windshield and helps to create a polished appearance.  Frit also provides car owners with a certain degree of sun protection, as well.
